What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums, jawbone, and the connective tissues that support your teeth. Periodontists complete several additional years of specialist training beyond dental school.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — yet it often progresses silently, without pain, until significant damage has already occurred. Early diagnosis and specialist treatment are the best defence against tooth loss.

At MiNa Family Dentistry, Dr. Adibrad brings specialist periodontal expertise directly into our family dental clinic — meaning you can access advanced gum care and implant surgery without being referred to another practice.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

  • Red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing
  • Gums that are pulling away from the teeth (recession)
  • Teeth that look longer than they used to
  • Loose, shifting, or separating teeth
  • Pain or discomfort when chewing
  • Deep pockets between teeth and gums
  • Pus between the teeth and gumline

Gum disease often has no pain in early stages. Book a gum health check if you notice any of these signs.

Types of Periodontal Disease

Gum disease progresses in stages — the earlier it is caught, the simpler the treatment and the better the outcome. Here is what each stage means for your oral health.

Stage 1Reversible

Gingivitis

The earliest and only reversible stage of gum disease. Caused by plaque buildup at the gumline, gingivitis produces red, swollen, or bleeding gums — but has not yet damaged the underlying bone or connective tissue. Professional cleaning and improved home hygiene can fully resolve it.

Stage 2Manageable

Chronic Periodontitis

The most common form of advanced gum disease. Progresses slowly over time, causing deeper gum pockets, gum recession, and gradual bone loss. Chronic periodontitis is not reversible but is highly manageable with professional treatment and consistent maintenance care.

Stage 3Urgent

Aggressive Periodontitis

A faster-progressing form that can cause rapid bone and attachment loss — even in otherwise healthy patients. Early diagnosis and immediate specialist-level treatment are critical to preventing tooth loss. Dr. Adibrad has specialist training in managing this condition.
